On a breezy overcast, on again off again rainy day (at least here in the Kapahulu area), I got an inkling to try some Pho (properly pronounced "fuh"). Being a native of beautiful Kaua'i, I grew up with saimin (ramen for other folks) and most notably Hamura's Saimin, but sans Hamura's, I had to satisfy my curiosity and craving another way.
A straight shot up Waialae Ave. and just over a 5 minute drive, Super Pho is located right across the street from Kaimuki Community Park between 10th and 11th Ave. For just about a year now I've been told to go to Super Pho, by co-workers and local Kaimukians, if I wanted the best tasting pho around. Finally, I gave in and decided to give it a go.
Just the name alone made me wonder why this was declared "Super" where no other adjective would have worked to describe this big bowl of broth. Upon one glance at the menu and I may have just answered my own question. There are about 16 selections of pho to choose from...even vegetarian pho! The menu is well categorized and by numbers, just to make it clear, there are 174 items to peruse and ponder. My waitress gave me less than 5 minutes to choose so I decided on the pho with seafood. It took just 10 minutes for my steamy aromatic SUPER bowl of hot broth to arrive and I had myself a pho facial. Fresh Thai basil, crisp mung bean sprouts, lemon wedges and jalapeno slices are the usual embellishments served up alongside it to add as you please. There was some sipping, slurrping and savoring going on as I enjoyed this soothing homey goodness. It had a nice clean and light taste and ironically refreshing. Even with the condiments, the pho was never overpowered and never compromised. Succulent shrimp, calamari, fish cake as well as the beautiful vermicelli noodles add substance to the soothing soup. All for the SUPER price of $8.99.
All in all fast, filling and very affordable....Super Pho!! I don't doubt that this would be a great place for recovery if you've had a hard night out....if you know what I mean! You can go and experience it for yourself at 3535 Waialae Ave. 7 days a week from 10am - 10pm.
